Who We Are:

The ASU Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science (GDCS) is an enterprising organization that leads the multi-agency ʻĀkoʻakoʻa Reef Restoration Program on Hawaiʻi Island, focused on improving coral reef outcomes and community participation along the 190 km stretch of coastline. The ʻĀkoʻakoʻa program requires an integrated combination of activities with diverse personnel, multiple marine and aviation assets, land-based facilities, and operations to achieve mission success. We seek top personnel to grow all programmatic elements and to shape scientific and culturally-based solutions for reef resilience on Hawaiʻi Island.

Who You Are:

Our Center seeks to build a team of part-time experienced, highly motivated and reliable individuals to serve as Research Vessel Operators (ReVO) with documented capabilities in marine operations, vessel handling and towing, and diver safety support. The best candidates take ownership of their role and the program and seek to improve our operations in every way possible.

Your Role:

You will be tasked with these core responsibilities:

1. Utilize and help maintain our fleet of marine vessels at the highest level of material and operational readiness. Current and forthcoming inventory includes Armstrong Catamaran 45 (Honokōhau, HI), Willard Marine SeaForce RIB 27 (Miloliʻi, HI), SAFEBoat Defender 32 (Puakō, HI), RIBCraft Interceptor 24 (Miloliʻi, HI), and OceanCraft 9.5 Special Operations RIBs (multiple locations in West Hawaiʻi).
2. Maintain appropriate vessel towing assets including trailers and trucks
3. Provide research diver safety support afloat

Your specific responsibilities include:

1. Vessel captaining (serving as the lead vessel crew member)
2. Vessel quality assurance and basic maintenance

Minimum Qualifications

DLNR boating certification, First Aid and CPR; At least one year of vessel towing and captaining experience in West Hawaiʻi waters.

Additional Desired Qualifications

1. Knowledge of Hawaiʻi Island geography including reefs, embayments, and other coastal features.
2. Knowledge and relationships with local communities in West Hawaiʻi
3. Experience communicating and coordinating with a diverse and geographically distributed team of part-time vessel operators in West Hawaiʻi.

Pay, Hours, and Place of Work

Hourly wage range is $30-$35, based on time in service. Monthly hours of commitment are variable and seasonal. You would be joining a team of ReVO colleagues living on Hawaiʻi Island who work interchangeably with growing program needs. These positions are best undertaken as part-time employment by qualified individuals seeking to support coral reef restoration. Bases of vessel operations may include Kailua-Kona, Keauhou, Miloliʻi, Puakō, and Kawaihae. You are responsible for commute to undertake your vessel and/or towing activities.
